CARGO Edinburgh Fringe (August 6-22, 2010)

Balbir worked as Movement Director / Choreographer on this large-scale co-production between Edinburgh Mela and Iron Oxide.

CARGO presented a risk-taking, water-soaked exploration of the universal need to migrate. This daring large-scale outdoor production weaved together extreme physicality, a stunning soundtrack, intricate imagery and strange yet familiar characters.

In a world of dangers, high seas and troubled lands, CARGO told the tale of two people and their quest for the perfect place to call home. Filled with adventurers, exiles, conquerors and slaves, CARGO explored the primal urge of humans to leave their country of origin, whether it be for a better life, to escape a past, for a new way of living, or to find… themselves.

Edinburgh Spotlight, Julie Dawson
In terms of staging, this is absolutely professional, with an impressive live score augmented by professional musicians, dramatic light effects and the sheer scale of the visuals. It has the feel of the large – scale street performances more often associated with European companies,”

Garden of Dreams

Balbir worked as movement director/choreographer for Garden on Dreams in collaboration with Monster Productions and Live Theatre, a performance of mischief, music and myth for under 7s and their families.

Garden of Dreams explores the narrative of a mischievous Rat who dares Kip to wake the Sleeping Giant. They have no idea of the trouble their game will cause. The Giant’s dreams create every new thing that enters the world. Without his dreams no new flower opens, no egg hatches, no baby is born and no new stories are told. Garden of Dreams explores how Kip and Rat get the Giant back to sleep, while going on adventures which see them receiving presents from the Monster in the Fridge, advice from the Very Smelly Boot and flying to magical places with the Cow Who Eats the Clouds!

New Classical Friction

New classical Friction, a collaboration of music and dance performance commissioned by The Three Cities Create and Connect Programme as part of Urban beats performed to over 400 people from Nottingham’s Asian community and at two further performances in Leicester and Derby.

The piece was composed, choreographed and performed by a team of leading professionals including classical Welsh composer Peter Stacey, Radio 1 prime time British Asian DJ, Bobby Friction, choreographers Leonard Jackson and Balbir Singh, a troupe of six professional dancers and East Midlands classical orchestra Viva.

The result of the artistic alliance of choreographers was a forty-five minute dance performance that fused Classical Indian Dance, Contemporary and Hip-hop. Observers were both delighted and surprised as they absorbed a fusion of art and culture; the old and the familiar sink with the new and the contemporary-all seamlessly interwoven into one.

The successes of the first performances, plans are now underway to extend the life of the piece by touring it to festivals and events both in the UK and abroad.
